Bill Gates expresses grief as ex-wife quits world's most influential non-profit
Bill Gates' ex-wife Melinda French Gates has decided to leave non-profit organisation and her resignation will take effect on June 7 this year
Philanthropist Melinda French Gates has decided to step down from her role at the non-profit organisation she set up with her ex-husband Bill Gates.
The resignation of the 59-year-old French Gates will take effect on June 7 this year. The 68-year-old Microsoft co-founder's ex-wife decides to part ways three years after her divorce.
She will receive $12.5 billion under the agreement. She will use the money on her philanthropic efforts for the good of women and families.
"After careful thought and reflection, I have decided to resign from my role as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation," Melinda said in a social media post.
"This is a critical moment for women and girls in the US and around the world -- and those fighting to protect and advance equality are in urgent need of support."
Reacting to her post, former US Secretary of state Hillary Clinton wrote on X, "Melinda, this is so exciting." "Thanks for everything you've already done, and I can't wait to see all you do next. Onward!"
Bill Gates and Melinda French married in 1994. They have three children. They divorced in 2021 however, they continued to co-chair the foundation.
Thanking his wife for for her "critical contributions", Bill Gates said, "As a co-founder and co-chair Melinda has been instrumental in shaping our strategies and initiatives, significantly impacting global health and gender equality."
"I am sorry to see Melinda leave, but I am sure she will have a huge impact in her future philanthropic work."
