A five-year-old girl was found lifeless in her home, according to New York police.

Police were called to the scene early in the morning on April 14, responding to a distress call about a child who was unconscious and not breathing. They rushed to the house around 3am, but it was too late.

The girl was pronounced dead at her Schenectady residence on April 14, said the Schenectady Police Department in a news release on April 15.

The girl's father, a 33-year-old man, is now facing serious charges. He is accused of denying his daughter food and water from April 10 to April 14, which led to her tragic death from starvation, according to reports from WRGB and other news outlets.

Charged with second-degree manslaughter and three counts of endangering the life of a child, the man pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on April 15.

One of the charges involves a 3-year-old child who was also present in the home at the time of the incident.

Representatives from the Schenectady County Public Defender’s Office, who are handling the man's case, have yet to comment on the matter.

It is still unclear who made the initial distress call that led to police discovering the situation. Meanwhile, the Schenectady Police Department’s Youth Aide Bureau is actively investigating the tragic event.

The father is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on April 19. However, requests for documents related to his arrest made by McClatchy News have yet to receive a response from the Schenectady Police Department.

Schenectady is located about 20 miles northwest of Albany.
