A hunter opened fire at another man believing he saw a male turkey, Florida police said.
The incident took place on March 17, when police authorities received a call, according to a news released from the Bunnell Police Department. The caller told them that a man was shot in the woods of Flagler County.
The man who called up was a hunter. He said that he was out hunting for turkeys while it was early morning and kind of dark. He saw some female turkeys and followed them deeper into the woods.
Then, he saw a big male plump turkey, but it was actually a fake turkey someone else put out to attract real ones, he remarked.
He shot his gun at the fake turkey and ended up injuring another man who was also out hunting. The male turkey was actually a decoy set up by another hunter, police said.
After the turkey hunter fired the gun, heard the man shout in a painful voice that he had been shot.
He felt really bad about what happened and immediately called 911 for help.
Police officials rushed to the site and helped the injured man airlifted to a hospital.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has launched the investigation into the incident.
