Students of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City have received news regarding their future that could change their lives.
Students found out on Monday that the college would soon be free of tuition since Ruth L Gottesman, EdD, chair of the Einstein Board of Trustees and board member of Montefiore Health System, made a substantial donation of $1 billion, according to People.
Einstein Medical School announced in a press statement that Dr Gottesman's gift is the biggest to any medical school in the nation and will guarantee that no student will ever have to pay tuition again.
“I’m happy to share with you that starting in August this year, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine will be tuition-free,” a rep for the school said in a video of the announcement posted to YouTube.
When the students realised they would not have to pay for their education while attending the college, they jumped out of their seats in excitement. The auditorium erupted in applause, and some people could be seen in the video crying as they gave each other hugs.
“This is something significantly profound, affluence no longer dictates who can become a doctor,” one user commented on the YouTube video.
Shortly after the pupils received the news, another person claiming to have been present posted on the school's Facebook page. “I wish I could bottle the happiness felt in that room. Truly a day I'll never forget.”
