Social media went crazy with users bashing former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump for forgetting his wife Melania Trump's name and calling her "Mercedes".
However, it appears that Trump was addressing another member of his staff, News Week reported.
During a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), the Republican candidate was talking about his wife when suddenly he changed the topic and began talking about someone else, which led to confusion.
He said, "Well, look, my wife, our great first lady, she was great. People love her."
"Oh, look at that, wow. Mercedes, that's pretty good!"
Adding to the confusion, people began sharing the clip on X, formerly Twitter, accusing Trump of "cognitive decline".
Conservative political consultant and Trump critic Rick Wilson said, "If Biden called Jill Biden 'Janice' we'd see 50 articles and sixteen NYT op-eds about his age."
Luke Beasley, a political commentator, wrote, "Donald Trump called his wife, Melania, 'Mercedes' in a speech, and I haven't seen a word from the media.
"Donald Trump is in cognitive decline — why won't the media cover it?"
However, it appears Trump was actually addressing Mercedes Schlapp, his former White House director of strategic communications.
Schlapp posted an article about the apparent mistake and called it "fake news at its finest".
