Sebastian Stan took up a very unusual role with the movie, A Different Man, and it also involved a lot work with prosthetic.

Stan, who is best known for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Bucky Barnes, signed on immediately after reading the script, in which he plays a man with facial disfigurement.

“You don’t come across a lot of scripts where you can’t predict what’s happening,” Stan told The Hollywood Reporter of the screenplay. “I thought, if I could just get what he was after with it, then I knew something new was going to come from me that I haven’t been able to do before.”

After years of making blockbuster films, Stan was thrown into a strict shooting schedule with only six weeks after he joined to begin the film’s 22-day shoot in New York City.

The actor was meant to wear heavy prosthetics for the first half of the film. The Winter Soldier actor, who also acts as a producer on the film, then roped in prosthetic designer and makeup artist Michael Marino.

Not only for the movie, Stan briefly wore the prosthetic while walking around New York, allowing him to see firsthand how people interacted with him.

Wearing the prosthetics helped him better understand the role and helped influence the second half of the film.

“You have eyesight only in one eye, and you don’t see someone coming from the other side as quickly,” Stan said. “Even though the prosthetics would physically be gone, it would still be there for him [mentally].”
