South Indian film star Vijay enters politics, will contest 2026 elections
Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam roughly translates into "Tamil Nadu Victory Party"
South Indian film star Vijay has launched a political party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, NDTV reported on Friday.
Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam roughly translates into "Tamil Nadu Victory Party."
According to Vijay, his party would not run for the 2024 Lok Sabha. As decided at its general council and executive council meetings, the TVK will not contest or back anyone.
However, TVK will contest the 2026 assembly elections.
In a statement shared online, Vijay has announced he will be quitting cinema after completing his two films and will become a full-fledged politician.
Vijay stated: "I have decided to complete the film I have already committed to without affecting the party work and completely involve myself in the politics of public service. I consider this my gratitude towards the people of Tamil Nadu."
Vijay had been aiming for a political career for a while; he had been involved in welfare measures such as free distribution of food, educational scholarships, libraries, evening tuition, and even legal help.
Recently, he organised a constituency-level programme to honour student toppers in public exams.
The news has ignited a wave of celebrations among his fans, with many anticipating his entry into the Lok Sabha.
Tamil Nadu has had many stars turn into politicians, such as MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa.
The 49-year-old actor, who is one of the highest-paid actors in the country, has worked in 68 films and is often compared to the likes of Rajnikanth. His films often shed light on social issues.
