LAHORE:Business in Gulberg, on Frezoepur Road and in the adjacent areas of Gaddafi Stadium remained suspended due to the first T20 cricket match between Pakistan and Bangladesh on Friday.
Owing to the security reasons, the government had already forcefully closed the businesses and offices located in Gaddafi Stadium while there was not business in Hafeez Centre, Main Market, Mini Market, M M Alam Road, Khurshid Qasuri Road and other markets of Gulberg in daytime while in the evening people also avoided going to the eateries located on M M Alam Road due to traffic mess. Similarly, sanitary shops and other business selling building construction material, including marble markets, and other businesses located on Ferozpur Road were also closed due to the cricket match.
Zeeshan, a marble seller on Ferozpur Road, said that they did not open their business due to traffic issues and security concerns.
No call of shutdown by the association concerned was given but the people themselves did not come to the market due to traffic issues, he said, adding that majority of the shopkeepers kept their shops closed.
The city traffic police also closed Ferozepur Road and Gulberg Main Boulevard and ther adjacent roads. Shopkeepers and workers of the markets were unable to reach their shops due to closure of shops. Ichhra Bazaar was also partially opened while the jewellery market on Ferozepur Road was also closed.
Hafiz Ahmed, a jeweler, said on Fridays usually business started after Friday prayers but due to traffic issues and closure of roads the businessmen avoided coming to their businesses. 10,000 cops for cricket teams: Police ensured foolproof security on the first cricket match of T-20 series between Pakistan and Bangladesh played at Qaddafi Stadium on Friday.
Comprehensive arrangements of security were seen at the hotel where the teams are boarding, routes, Qaddafi Stadium and the surrounding areas. Heavy deployment of contingent of security personnel was made on the route of the teams.
More than 10,000 police officers and officials were deputed for the security purpose. Four-layer security arrangements were made for the citizens. Deputy Inspector General of Police Operations Lahore Rai Babar Saeed and other senior police officers visited the Qaddafi Stadium and reviewed the security arrangements.
The DIG Operations briefed the police officers and officials to remain high alert. Presentation: Punjab University’s Department of Metallurgy and Material Engineering (DMME) organised a detailed presentation on corrosion protection and its survey techniques for the students of BSc.
PU Faculty of Engineering and Technology Dean Prof Dr Muhammad Taqi Zahid Butt inaugurated the two technical presentations on Cathodic protection delivered by Imran Chaudhry. The three-hour presentation was followed by field demonstration and operation of the latest Cathodic protection survey.

Workshop: Forty-five lecturers and assistant professors from the public sector colleges of Sargodha division attended a two-day training workshop at Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) Staff Development Academy.
The training workshop covered a wide range of topics, including modern teaching/learning methodologies and tools, technological integration into pedagogy, classroom management, boosting students’ interest in classroom activities, and effective evaluation of their performance.
Noted resource persons delivered lectures to the faculty members.
MoU: The director general of Oxfam, an international NGO, called on Punjab Women Protection Authority (PWPA) Chairperson Kaneez Fatima Chader in her office on Friday.
During the meeting, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed regarding prevention of violence against women. According to the details, PWPA and Oxfam will mutually take preventive measures to cope with the violence against women.
The male staff in institutes/organisations of women will be trained on how they could provide legal and moral help to the victim women besides arranging sessions for increasing the capabilities and abilities of the employees. Kaneez Fatima said all possible measures were being taken for safeguarding the rights of women.
