Amjad paid tributes on receiving Turkish award

LAHORE:Punjab University on Wednesday hosted a ceremony in honour of renowned poet, thinker and writer Amjad Islam Amjad as he has recently received “Najeeb Fazil Award” by Turkish government.

PU Vice Chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmad, Amjad Islam Amjad, Pro VC Prof Dr Muhammad Saleem Mazhar, Dr Mubbsher Munawar Khan, Dr Iqbal Chawla, Dr Zahid Munir Amir, Dr Muhammad Kamran, Dr Ahmed Bilal, Dr Zia ul Hassan, Dr Umbreen Salah Uddin, heads of various departments, faculty members and a large number of students participated in the event.

Addressing the ceremony, PU VC Prof Niaz Ahmad said that Amjad Islam Amjad had rendered outstanding and exceptional services to all the institutions where he had served. He said that Amjad Islam Amjad through his creations had brought Pakistan to limelight. He said, “We were proud of Amjad who was alumni of Punjab University.” He also thanked Turkish government for acknowledging the services of Amjad.

Prof Dr Saleem Mazhar said that it was ‘our important issue that we mostly did not acknowledge our heroes and ignore them’. However, he said, Amjad was the second poet after Faiz Ahmad Faiz who had been officially acknowledged by a foreign country. Dr Ahmad Bilal said that Amjad was the best teacher and he taught in an excellent way so that literary creations could reach perfection. Dr Zahid Munir Amir said that the dramas like Waris written by Amjad left charismatic effects on the audience and people used to ensure their presence at home or before a TV set by avoiding all their activities.

Dr Muhammad Kamran said that Amjad was the most versatile writer of our age. He said Amjad had also covered international topics in his poetry. Dr Zia ul Hasan said Amjad had introduced Pakistan and Urdu to the world through his writings. He said if one wanted to know what had happened in Pakistan in the last fifty years, one should read his writings. Dr Umbreen Salahuddin said young people idealized Amjad and he had always encouraged young poets. Addressing the ceremony, Amjad thanked the speakers and audience for their love. He said that he began his journey from Punjab University and advised the students not to underestimate life and opportunities. He said that successful people got success due to their continuous efforts. On the occasion, the speakers read a few stanzas from the poetry of Amjad while Israr Chisti sang Amjad’s poem.

award ceremony: The Faculty of Bio-Sciences of University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore, organised ‘Best Teacher Award’ ceremony for its assistant professors and lecturers’ categories.

UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Masood Rabbani presided over the ceremony and distributed commendatory certificates and shields among the best teachers. Faculty of Biosciences Dean Prof Dr Habib-ur-Rehman and faculty members were also present. In assistant professors’ category, Dr Sehrish Firyal from the Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (IBBT) while in lecturer category Ms Amina Chugtai, lecturer in Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN), have been declared the best teachers of the faculty and they were given awards.

Prof Masood Rabbani lauded the performance of faculty members for imparting knowledge and skills to students in best manner.

Meanwhile, UVAS organised a farewell party in the honour of Admin Officer of Registrar Office Muhammad Mahfooz on his retirement. A large number of professors and officers were present on the occasion.
