LAHORE:The Lahore High Court on Friday set aside death penalty of a man who had killed his daughter for not making a “round roti (bread)” for him.
A sessions court had on October 24, 2016, awarded death sentence to Khalid Mahmood and also imposed a fine of Rs500,000 on him.
Mahmood, a resident of Shadbagh, had allegedly confessed to his crime during police investigation that he had killed his teenage daughter. A sessions court in 2016 had awarded him death sentence.
The convict filed an appeal against the sentence saying the police had failed to produce any evidence against him before the trial court. However, he said, the trial court announced the verdict in the absence of any concrete evidence.
The counsel of the appellant asked the LHC to set aside the trial court’s decision for lack of evidence. A two-judge bench headed by Justice Shehram Sarwar allowed the appeal and acquitted the appellant for lack of evidence.
Remand of Yousaf Abbas extended An accountability court on Friday extended judicial remand of Yousaf Abbas, a nephew of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, until December 20, in Chaudhry Sugar Mills (CSM)/ money-laundering case.
Accountability Court Judge Ameer Muhammad Khan conducted the case proceedings wherein Yousaf Abbas was also produced. During the brief hearing, the court directed the investigation officer for filing the reference as soon as possible and also allowed medical check-up of Yousaf Abbas following his request.
It is pertinent to mention that the court had exempted Nawaz Sharif from personal appearance for a period of four weeks, whereas Maryam Nawaz was also exempted until filing of the reference in the case. The Sharif family had been accused of using CSM for money-laundering and illegal transfer of its shares.
