People float paper boats in the Ravi River as ritualistic offerings to the 11th century Persian saint Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jillani. The ritual is observed as a gesture of gratitude when they are blessed with the boy child.
It is believed that the saint rescued an almost sunken boat that was carrying a wedding procession. The devotees, who descend on the river front every year around this time as per theIslamic calendar, also distribute free food (or ‘langar’)wholeheartedly.
