LAHORE : Two labourers died while eight others fell unconscious due to poisonous gas in a factory on Bund Road in the Shafiqabad police limits on Thursday.
Rescue 1122 responded to the emergency and shifted the victims to Mayo Hospital.
Police took the factory owner, Shahzad, into their custody as part of legal action. Rescuers quoted the victims saying a drum full of chemical was put on stove due to which the gas spread in the premises. As a result, 10 labourers fell unconscious. They were rushed to hospital where two were pronounced dead. The deceased have been identified as Imran, 25, a resident of Pakpattan and Safdar, 28, a resident of Muzaffargarh
suicide: A 50-year-old woman committed suicide by taking poisonous pills in the Ravi Road police area on Thursday. The victim has been identified as Naseem. She was mentally ill. On the day of the incident, she took poisonous pills. As a result, her condition went critical. She was rushed to hospital where she died.
Police handed over the body to her family after completing legal formalities.
Meanwhile, a 25-year old addict died in Ravi Road police jurisdiction over administering drugs injection. Police removed the body to morgue.
Road accidents: The Punjab Emergency Service/Rescue 1122 responded to 929 road accidents in all the 36 districts of Punjab during the last 24 hours.
Eight people died and 1,014 suffered injuries in the road accidents. Out of the injured, 594 badly injured were removed to hospitals. As many as 420 victims with minor injuries were given first aid by the rescue medical teams.
PHP: The Punjab Highway Patrol (PHP) extended help to road users in 2,778 instances besides removing 1,457 encroachments.
Besides extending help to road users and removing encroachments, the PHP also reunited five children namely Muhammad Zeshan, Danish Ali, Muhammad Tabish, Muhammad Umar and Mohsin with their parents.
Medical camp: A one-day medical camp was set up at National Highways & Motorway Police Training College in Sheikhupure.
At the camp set up with the efforts of commandant of the training college, DIG Mehboob Aslam, a team of specialist doctors from Services Hospital, Lahore, examined 450 officers and trainees. The team also took various medical tests of the visitors to the camp. The team consisted of heart, liver, stomach and ENT specialists.
Talking on the occasion, DIG Mehboob Aslam said it was duty of the department to provide all medical facilities to its officers and take every step for their quality treatment.
