fire safety: Punjab Emergency Service Director General Dr Rizwan Naseer has expressed his concerns on increasing number of fire incidents in Punjab.

He expected that all authorities concerned must implement National Fire Safety Codes notified by the Pakistan Engineering Council in 2017 to ensure that the entire urbanisation is safe. He asked all the District Emergency Officers (DEOs) to share the results of Fire Safety Audits in District Emergency Boards’ meetings of their respective districts while asking the district administrations to ensure necessary steps for fire safety. He expressed these views while addressing all DEOs’ conference here at the Emergency Services Headquarters on Monday. The meeting was attended by Fire Safety Consultant Marcus Wilkins, Tariq Moin, Secretary General Fire Protection Association of Pakistan (NPFP), Asad Ali, Deputy Director (HR) Dr Foaad Shahzad Mirza, DD (Research) Riffat Zia, DD (Operations) Ayyaz Aslam, Ali Hassan, Head of Law & Admin Wing, all DEOs and officers from Rescue 1122 Headquarters.

Marcus Wilkins, an architect of two major shopping malls in Lahore, said that they have adopted International Regulations & Fire Safety Codes of United Kingdom and Australia while designing those two major malls in Pakistan. He said: “We have seen a building stock in Pakistan without fire safety measures, people have least education about fire prevention and minimal training of fire safety. We need to educate people and communities around us about architects, fire prevention and their capacity building to assist Emergency Services. All stakeholders need to play their due role in establishment of safer communities in Pakistan. We have a social responsibility to monitor when architect designs any building and construction process is underway.” Tariq Moin gave presentation on National Fire Safety Codes and shared the efforts of department concerned for carrying out that collective effort as a national cause.

Director General Dr Rizwan Naseer appreciated the efforts of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) pertaining to National Fire Safety Codes and asked the DEOs to ensure that buildings are safe in their respective districts. He said: “Our Fire Rescuers put their lives at risk during firefighting as 13 firefighters sacrificed their lives while fighting the fire at Ghakhar Plaza, Rawalpindi, but now again plaza is there.

We need to ensure some basic steps including installing fire extinguishers, sprinkler system, hydrant system, fire alarm system, external steel staircase, emergency exit doors, emergency evacuation building maps etc., in commercial and residential buildings to ensure fire safety.
