A traffic warden was killed by a speeding truck near a Canal Bank Road underpass in the Muslim Town area on Saturday.

The deceased warden was identified as Hafiz Naeem. He had signaled a truck driver to stop his vehicle who tried to pass under Gulzar Underpass, Canal Road. The truck driver ignored the warden’s signal, hit him and escaped from the scene. The injured warden was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Later, the victim’s Namaz-e-Janaza was offered at Bagum Kot. The Lahore chief traffic officer, divisional officers and traffic wardens attended the funeral for Hafiz Naeem. The CTO gave Rs 100,000 to the family of the deceased to perform his last rites. Hafiz Naeem hailed from Ravi Road and was survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.

The CTO said that another solider of Shaheed Capt ® Mobeen Ahmad had sacrificed his life in the line of duty. He said that they would keep cooperating with the family of the victim and award job to one child of the victim. He also vowed to bear educational expenditures for the children of the victim from Welfare Fund of CTPL. It is pertinent to mention here that traffic wardens are deputed at night at the entrance of underpasses to stop heavy vehicles from passing under it. There have been many cases in which heavy vehicles ignored sign boards and entered the underpasses and stuck there. The incidents not only caused loss to public property but also caused nuisance to public as massive traffic jams were observed in such situation.
