636 women councillors given capacity-building training

LAHORE:Effective participation generates opportunities for women to participate in political process and ultimately enhance their capacities so that they can gain more self-confidence and make attempts for a better share in political system.

These views were expressed by speakers at a project closing ceremony “Strengthening Women Political Leadership in Local Governance Systems” organised by an NGO in collaboration with US Agency for International Development under its Small Grants and Ambassador's Fund Programme (SGAFP) at a local hotel on Wednesday.

Chief guest Punjab Minister for Women Development Hamida Wahiduddin appreciating the initiative of the women councillors’ political education said such programmes should not end here. She appreciated WISE to impart capacity building training to 636 women councillors from Lahore and Nankana Sahib; developing training manual, formation of first ever Local Government Women Councillors’ Caucus for the project sustainability; launch of two Women Councilors Profile Books; and documentary. She added that the representation of the women is now 10pc in provincial assembly elected on direct seats. Speaking on this occasion, Bushra Khaliq shared the major findings of NGO research on women councillors in districts of Nankana Sahib and Lahore.
