Punjab government Friday announced construction of two new district jails in the province, one in Lahore and the other one in Khushab.

According to the budget documents for the fiscal year 2017-18, the government has earmarked Rs 1.652 billion for the development of jails, out of which, only Rs 20 million were allocated for construction of two new jails.

The ongoing schemes include: construction of District Jail Rawalpindi, construction of High Security Prison in Northern Punjab in Mianwali, construction of District Jail Hafizabad, construction of district Jail Narowal, provision of toilet facilities (460) at Central Jail Lahore, establishment of Punjab Prisons Staff Training College in Sahiwal, missing facilities in High Security Prisons Sahiwal in Southern Punjab, provision of missing facilities in under construction district jail Pakpattan, construction of District Jail Lodhran, construction of District Jail Khanewal, construction of District Jail Rajanpur, missing facilities in district jail Layyah, construction of Central Watch Towers in 10 jails of Punjab, construction of five residences for assistant superintendents in Punjab jails, construction of 20-bed unit for the treatment of drug addicts in Punjab jails, construction of barracks and cells in Faisalabad, Sargodha, M/Garh, Shahpur and Jhelum jails, construction of 28 residences, double-storey, for BS-1 to 10 for warders at 22 jails one each, provision of missing facilities in under construction district jails Okara, Bhakkar, Pakpattan, Layyah and HSP Sahiwal, water filtration plant in all Punjab jails, allocation for completion of incomplete/unfunded schemes under jail sector, rehabilitation/replacement of sewerage system in Punjab jails, construction of proper firing range in four jails i.e. Central jail Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi, provision of ½ cusic turbine pump, boring, construction of pump chamber and water supply, conversion of 45 judicial lock-ups into sub-jail of Punjab province and construction of gallows in Punjab Jails.
