Social security doctors protest

Under the banner of Social Security Doctors Association (SSDA), Punjab, the doctors of social security on Tuesday protested wearing armbands all over Punjab for fulfillment of their demands. According to a press release issued here, SSDA General Secretary Dr Safdar Baloch said that protest banners were displayed in all the social security hospitals in Punjab. SSDA showed its deep concern with the shortage of specialists and general cadre doctors in social security institution due to lack of pay increase since long. Specialist doctors are being forced to do double duties in more than one hospital without any incentive. —Correspondent

PU students win contests

Punjab University (PU) students from various departments participated in various intervarsity competitions and clinched prominent positions. In All Pakistan Poetry and Bait Bazi Competitions at Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU), Lahore, PU students Musa Kazim and Sohaib Mugheera bagged first position in Bait Bazi. Mustafa Mendi and Sohaib Mugheera in Afsana and Urdu Nazm obtained first positions, respectively. Mubashir Saeed grabbed second position in both competitions. In the second Syed Ghassan Azhar All Pakistan Drama and Stand-Up Comedy Competitions, students Sohaib Mugheera and Asim Choudhary clinched first positions in script writing and stand-up comedy, respectively. Meanwhile, in the third GCU All Pakistan Intercollegiate and Interuniversity Quiz Competitions-17, organised by GCU, Lahore, students Atif Shafiq and Asad Raza Mohal got third position in quiz competition.

YDA concerned over torture

The Young Doctors Association (YDA), Punjab, has expressed grave concern over a deteriorating security situation in hospitals after a latest incident of alleged attack by a patient’s attendant injuring a doctor in Services Hospital in Lahore on Monday night. The doctors claimed that an attendant of a female patient in Medical Unit-II of Services Hospital attacked and injured a duty doctor, Dr Junaid, with a broken glass, which caused multiple lacerations and wounds on his arms leading to excessive bleeding. —Correspondent

Pakistan railways to insure all staff

Pakistan Railways has finalised an agreement with Postal Life Insurance to insure its entire staff. According to a statement issued here Tuesday, this was stated by PR Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Javed Anwar after a meeting with Pakistan Post Director General Rubina Tayyab. Meanwhile, PR issued transfer/posting orders of its several senior officials, According to the notification, Property and Land Joint Director Hafeez Ullah has been posted as director, Property and Land. Deputy Chief Engineer (Middle) Farman Ghani has been posted as chief engineer (Open) and Deputy Chief Engineer (Track) Hammad Hassan Mirza has been given additional charge of the post of project director (Track) Khanpur-Lodhran. Chief Customer Facilitation Officer Younas Rehman has been posted as CMM and Deputy CPO Coordination Rizwan Saeed Khan has been given additional charge of CPO. Grade 17 officers, including AEN Muhammad Abbas, AEN Hussain Bhutto and AEN Sajjad Ahmed have been transferred and posted for new assignments.

Prof Muhammad Nazir of LGH was elected president, Dr Adil Khurshid of Nawaz Sharif Hospital vice-president, Dr Naveed Iqbal of Jinah Hospital general secretary, Dr Humayun Saeed of Services Hospital finance secretary and Dr Nauman Ahmed of Sharif Medical City joint secretary.

Hypertension Day today

World Hypertension Day is being observed throughout the world today (May 17) to create awareness in the public and to lay stress on prevention methods to avoid its harmful effects. Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) has decided to organise a campaign on the occasion all over Pakistan to combat the ever-increasing deleterious effects of deadly disease of hypertension. PIMA will hold free clinics all over the country on the occasion and also hold sessions for public awareness about hypertension. According to international statistics, over one crore peope have high blood pressure, and the number is expected to reach 150 crore by 2025, with 29 percent young people. PIMA President Dr Abdul Malik said that a certain level of blood pressure was essential for life about 140/90, however, if readings consistently exceeded this, treatment becomes necessary.
