Cleanliness is the main part of our religion and it is our responsibility to keep our environment and surroundings neat and clean. This was stated by speakers at a seminar organised by Mir Khalilur Rahman Memorial Society (MKRMS) of Jang Group of Publications in collaboration with Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) here on Monday.
The seminar titled “Solid Waste Management on Eid-ul-Azha and role of citizens in maintenance of sanitation” was held at a local hotel with the aim to share Eid plan with its stakeholders and sensitise them for their required role during Eid days. Provincial Minister for Environment Begum Zakiya Shahnawaz, LWMC Chairman Ahmad Rafay Alam, LWMC Managing Director Bilal Mustafa Syed were among chief guests of the seminar. Other guest speakers included Project Director Albayrak Mr Care, Project Coordinator Ozpak Afzal Shah, MPA Majid Zahoor, Environment DG Dr Javed Iqbal, WWF MD Hammad Naqi and many others.
Briefing about proposed sanitation arrangements of LWMC on upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, LWMC MD said our operations on Eid will be backed by more machinery and workforce as compared to previous years.
“The number of customised waste bags have been increased to 1.5 million for effective and smooth collection of animal waste expected to be collected and dumped in an environment-friendly way on Eid”, he said. Provincial Minister for Environment Begum Zakiya Shahnawaz reaffirmed the support of the Punjab government to enhance and improve the living standard of people of Punjab by ensuring clean and healthy cities.
The LWMC chairman paid tribute to the services of sanitary workers and termed them heroes of waste management system. He emphasised the role of civil society and government for improvement of the system.
Other speakers also highlighted the subject from various aspects and emphasised the need for mutual collaboration between LWMC and district departments, including obligations of a common citizen.
An awareness stall was also set up on the occasion to display and distribute information and awareness material.
