Kylian Mbappe reveals why France would never let him play until 41 like Ronaldo

French football star Kylian Mbappe shared his viewpoint regarding achieving longevity like Cristiano Ronaldo to play until the age of 41.

In an exclusive interview with German newspaper BILD, the 27-year-old Real Madrid captain explained he does not envision France selecting him at the age of 41 despite Ronaldo’s ongoing success with Portugal at that age and regular starts for Al-Nassr.

He answered candidly, “Can I play for France until I'm 41 like Cristiano Ronaldo? We have to be honest, considering the country I play in, France would never let me play until I’m 41."

"But Cristiano shows that if you’re in good physical and mental shape, you can play at this high level for a long time. For me, however, I don’t think that will be the case."

Mbappe also regards the Portuguese footballer as his childhood idol and major historical influence with the two sharing a mutual appreciation. He also expressed deep admiration for Ronaldo’s exceptional and mental discipline.

Mbappe expressed his desire to achieve longevity in football like Ronaldo but he also maintained a realistic outlook as a career stretching into his early 40s is highly unlikely for himself, pointing to the intense demands and expectations surrounding the French national team. He does not currently envision sustaining that level for himself over such a long period.

Other potential reasons also include career focus as at the age of 27 he is concentrated on immediate goals rather than distant ones.

Mbappe has notched 8 goals and 2 assists in 8 games this season, while Ronaldo keeps delivering. Recently Ronaldo has been named to the Portugal Nations League squad at the age of 14 by new coach Jorge Jesus.

Last month, Mbappe has been nominated in Ballon d’Or 2026 Men nominee list and other nominees include Jude Bellingham, Pau Cubarsí, Marc Cucurella, Bruno Fernandes, Gabriel, Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe and many others.
