Liberals score double byelection victory in Toronto and Quebec
The result represents a gain for the governing Liberals, who have taken the seat from the Conservatives
The federal Liberals are projected to win two byelections in Toronto and Quebec, including flipping a Conservative-held riding, according to CBC News.
The CBC decision desk projected Liberal candidate Tanveer Shahnawaz as the winner in Toronto's Beaches-East York riding.
Shahnawaz maintained a strong share of the vote, although it remained below the historic 68 percent secured by former Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith in 2025.
The NDP also saw its support rebound significantly in the Toronto riding, rising from 6.9 percent last year to more than 20 percent.
Shahnawaz arrived at a Toronto pub shortly before 11:00 PM to celebrate with supporters.
"It is going to be the honour of a lifetime. It's a great time to be a Liberal in Canada and in Beaches-East York," he said, adding: "Let’s get to work.”
Meanwhile, CBC News projected Liberal Daniel Gobeil as the winner in Quebec's Chicoutimi-Le Fjord riding.
The result represents a gain for the governing Liberals, who have taken the seat from the Conservatives, giving the party a double victory in Monday's federal byelections.
