Queen Elizabeth II's unseen 1971 corgi snap reveals her off-duty style

Queen Elizabeth II looks like a breath of fresh air in a throwback snap shared by Buckingham Palace.

The official Instagram account of the royal gift shop, Buckingham Palace Shop, posted the late monarch's photo in which she can be seen posing on rocks beside the Garbh Allt burn waterfall at Balmoral Castle with her corgis in September 1971.

The photograph was captured by photographer Lord Lichfield.

The late Queen donned her Stewart Tartan-inspired dress for the outing, making another statement for her off-duty style.

The page revealed that the royal family traditionally goes for a retreat at Balmoral Castle in the Scottish Highlands in August.

Focusing on the Queen's attire, the caption reads, "Queen Elizabeth II often chose the Old Stewart Tartan, a heather, grass-green and poppy-red tartan during relaxed moments at Balmoral, making it a signature of her off-duty style.⁠"

As the page is dedicated to promoting royal gifts inspired by royal traditions, Queen's iconic Old Stewart Tartan collection is being sold at the Buckingham Palace shop and its website too, with worldwide shipping service.

Queen Elizabeth is known for her fashion, who wore hundreds of statement outfits during her historic 70-year reign.

An ongoing exhibit,Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style,at The King's Gallery, Buckingham Palace, London, has put over 300 items from the late Queen's wardrobe on display, including her wedding dress, Coronation dress, and design sketches.

The exhibition began on April 10, 2026, and is expected to end in April 2027.
