Prince William joins fans in backing England at World Cup start

Prince William has sent a personal message wishing England good luck before their first match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Prince and Princess of Wales’ official social media account posted a supportive note for the Three Lions as they prepared to face Croatia in their opening group game.

After FIFA posted about the start of the tournament, the royal account replied, “Good luck to England ahead of their first World Cup group match tonight! Here’s to a great tournament ahead," before signing off with "W," initial used by Prince William.

England, who is aiming to win their first World Cup since 1966, begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas, with kick-off set for 9pm UK time.

The match is a repeat of their 2018 semi-final meeting, when Croatia beat England.

While best known as a devoted supporter of Aston Villa, Prince William,who is also Patron of the Football Association, has frequently attended England matches and major international tournaments in both his royal and FA roles.

He recently visited the team’s training base at St George’s Park to wish players well before the tournament.
