More than 121,000 customers across Hawaii were left without electricity on Friday as a powerful Kona low storm caused widespread damage to the power network.
According to Hawaiian Electric, outages were reported across several islands including O’ahu and parts of Maui County.
By 4:00 PM, 121,020 customers statewide were without power. Earlier in the afternoon, outage data showed approximately 111,366 customers affected across around 166 outage areas.
Utility officials warned that some residents could face extended outages.
On O’ahu, around 113,800 customers lost electricity while about 15,600 customers in parts of Maui County were also affected.
Hawaiian Electric said two of the three transmission lines supplying East Honolulu from Windward Oahu were damaged during the storm. T
The remaining line is currently supplying electricity to the area.
Officials warned that if the final line is also damaged, repair crews could face delays because the lines run through steep terrain near the Ko’olau mountain range where access is difficult during severe weather.
