The speech will take place in the House of Representatives chamber at the US Capitol in Washington DC.

The annual address is a constitutional requirement. The Constitution states the president "shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient".

The event brings together members of the Senate and House of Representatives, Supreme Court justices and military leaders.

Trump is expected to outline his administration’s accomplishments and set out his priorities ahead of the November midterm elections.

According to the BBC, the address will be streamed live on its website and TV channel, with coverage beginning at 08:00 PM ET. The speech will also air on major US television networks.
