The Montreal Canadiens’ interest in Nazem Kadri earlier this season was genuine, but recent roster changes have altered the team’s plans.
According to Marco D'Amico, the Canadiens did reach out to the Calgary Flames to check on Kadri’s availability during the fall.
At the time, Montreal was looking to add toughness and experience down the middle, and Kadri fit that need.
He also had not included the Canadiens on his no trade clause. However, the situation has changed significantly since then. The emergence of Oliver Kapanen has helped stabilize the Canadiens’ centre depth.
The young forward has developed into a reliable top six option, reducing the urgency to add a veteran pivot.
Another major factor was Montreal’s decision to reacquire Phillip Danault in December. By bringing Danault back from Los Angeles for a second round pick, general manager Kent Hughes addressed defensive needs at center without taking on a long term contract.
With Kapanen producing, Danault anchoring the middle, and prospect Michael Hage progressing quickly, the Canadiens are no longer eager to commit to Kadri’s $7 million salary.

initial interest in Kadri, but teams like DET, CAR and MIN continue to circle”, D'Amico tweeted.
Montreal’s focus has now shifted to the wing, where management is looking for a scoring forward to complement Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield.
Kadri remains in demand, with teams like Minnesota and Carolina viewed as stronger fits as the Canadiens prioritize flexibility.
