Revolutionary AI lamp may transform epilepsy detection in real time

Portuguese startup Lampsy Health in a recent breakthrough has developed an AI-powered lamp which is capable of detecting epileptic seizures in real time.

The smart lamp called “Lampsy” can transform epilepsy detection with 99 percent accuracy.

As per company’s findings, the lamp also provides 18 times fewer false alarms than other alternatives.

According to Lampsy Health executive, Vicente Garção, this device can improve quality of life for patients and their caregivers and ease “the emotional burden” by sending real-time alerts.

"In this way, people can be helped and lives can be saved. ... The fact is that many children with epilepsy sleep with their parents into adulthood. This greatly jeopardises the family's quality of life," Garção added.

The device adopts a non-intrusive approach as it only captures images. The privacy can also be preserved as no video data is shared or stored externally.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), epilepsy, a neurological disorder, affects 50 million people globally.

As per studies, it is difficult to track down nocturnal epileptic seizures as 86 percent of these seizures cannot be detected, thereby leading to severe repercussions, such as sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP).

According to the company, the smart lamp would be commercially available in Europe in 2026.
