Aurora Australis 2025: How, when, where to watch southern lights tonight

Skygazers in Australia might be in for a treat tonight as the Aurora Australis is expected to lighten up the night sky and it could be visible with the naked eye.

The Australian Space Weather Forecasting Center has issued a geomagnetic storm alert, indicating that the night sky could glow vivid green and pink, a delightful surprise for skywatchers.

The best view of the stunning southern lights will be in Tasmania.

However, the residents of New South Wales (NSW) will also have a chance to witness the beautiful show of lights if they’re in the right place at the right time.

Aurora Australia is a natural phenomenon that is most likely to occur during geomagnetic storms, though sightings aren’t guaranteed.

But if the skies are clear with a low light pollution, there’s a strong chance that southern lights can be observed in the sky.

For today’s Aurora Australis, get away from the city lights into a dark spot and look south between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. to treat your eyes.

The Aurora lights might also be visible to some of the residents of the United States.

The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center has said that aurora lights could be visible in states bordering Canada.
