he Lahore Branch Canal’s waters don’t run deep. (The average depth of this 60-kilometre long nahr is about five feet.) The greenbelt that runs along it makes it a popular public resort, especially on hot summer days. Men as well as women flock to the canal — they lie around at the grassy banks, under the thick shade of some of the city’s oldest trees, and enjoy snacks, while their children dive into the cool waters for a free swim. Some women too have a way with the waters of the nahr and don’t mind joining in the fun.
