LAHORE:Two six-year old girls drowned in the Ravi River near China Park Afghan Basti. According to eyewitnesses, the girls - identified as Shazia, daughter of Gul Mir and Amna, daughter of Hikmat - had gone to the riverbank to wash clothes but they slipped into the deep water and drowned.

Rescue teams, including divers, rushed to the scene upon receiving the alert and retrieved the bodies after an extensive search operation. The bodies were handed over to police for legal formalities.

Local residents expressed grief over the incident, highlighting the lack of safety measures near the riverbank. "These tragedies are preventable if proper warnings or barriers are installed," said a neighbour.

Four imposters held

Punjab Police have arrested four individuals for allegedly impersonating genuine candidates during the recruitment process for the Special Protection Unit (SPU).

The arrests were made under the supervision of DIG Syed Hamad Abid, Chairman of the Recruitment Board, who emphasised that the ongoing hiring process is being conducted with complete transparency and merit. "Our recruitment drive is strictly based on professional standards, integrity, and eligibility criteria," Abid stated. "We aim to select competent and dedicated individuals committed to public service and national security."

Police sources revealed that the suspects attempted to replace actual candidates during the selection phase. A case has been registered, and investigations are underway to determine if more individuals were involved in the scam. The SPU recruitment has drawn significant attention, with authorities vowing to maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward fraud. "No compromises will be made on merit or transparency," DIG Abid reiterated, assuring that only the most qualified candidates will be inducted.
