LAHORE : Pakistan has taken a proactive approach to enhancing governance, tackling corruption, and promoting transparency in an effort to counter negative global perceptions.
A series of measures have been implemented to strengthen anti-corruption mechanisms and engage citizens in the fight against corrupt practices. Talking to The News, an official said that National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has played a key role in investigating and prosecuting corruption cases, particularly against influential figures.
‘Specialised anti-corruption courts have been reinforced to ensure swift judicial processes, while new legislation has been introduced to facilitate asset recovery from corrupt individuals. Pakistan has also collaborated with international organisations such as the World Bank and Transparency International to enhance its anti-corruption framework’, he said adding, ‘Successful cases are regularly publicised to underscore the country’s commitment, and an Anti-Corruption Coordination Committee has been formed to ensure inter-governmental cooperation. Transparency in public procurement has been prioritised to minimise corruption risks, with independent audits keeping a close watch on public-sector projects.’ Additionally, the government has strengthened whistleblower protection laws to encourage reporting of corrupt practices without fear of reprisal, he said.
He explained that citizen engagement has been a crucial element in these efforts, saying, ‘National anti-corruption campaigns have been launched to raise public awareness, alongside platforms that allow citizens to report corruption anonymously. Civil society organisations are actively collaborating with the government to monitor development projects, while public hearings and forums provide spaces for citizens to discuss corruption-related issues. NGOs are also contributing by conducting anti-corruption training for government officials, and citizen advisory committees have been established to oversee accountability measures. Electoral monitoring by civil society groups has been expanded, and public education campaigns continue to inform citizens about their rights and responsibilities in combating corruption. Legal support is available for individuals engaged in anti-corruption initiatives, and public accountability platforms have been introduced to allow for direct citizen feedback on government actions.’
Through these measures, Pakistan is demonstrating its resolve to curb corruption and build a more transparent and accountable governance system, the official said.
