LAHORE:The Punjab government has announced plans for the implementation of agroecological zoning within the next three months to streamline crop cultivation practices across the province.
This declaration came during a pivotal meeting convened at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, attended by key officials including Secretary of Agriculture Punjab Iftikhar Ali Sahoo, and the Vice-Chancellor of Agriculture University, Faisalabad, Professor Dr. Iqrar Ahmed Khan. Minister Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani was given a comprehensive briefing on various initiatives, including the establishment of the Pak China Development Centre and efforts to boost the production of soybean seeds and citrus fruits.
Emphasising the importance of collaboration with industry stakeholders, Minister Kirmani highlighted the potential for enhancing the value addition of sesame seeds and expanding potato paste production. The meeting also addressed ongoing measures for land improvement in Punjab, including the establishment of the Pak China Development Centre and plans for citrus restoration in the region. Additional insights were shared by the Secretary of Agriculture Iftikhar Ali Sahoo who called for proposals to enhance agricultural research and foster partnerships with the private sector to augment soybean seed production.
The poultry industry was urged to play a proactive role in supporting the procurement of local soybeans. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan underscored the significant contribution of female students, comprising 50% of the 30,000-strong student body at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad.
He further highlighted the establishment of 171 soybean plots covering 700 acres, underscoring the university’s commitment to agricultural innovation and sustainability. The meeting witnessed robust participation from the Director of Agricultural Information Punjab, Naveed Asmat Kahloon, agricultural scientists, and a diverse array of academia, signalling a collaborative approach towards advancing Punjab’s agricultural landscape.
