ISLAMABAD: Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi on his rare appearance in the National Assembly on Friday faced a tough time from the opposition members who called him the country’s Heinrich Himmler, a powerful figure in the Hitler regime and Nazi Germany.

Taking the floor on a point of order, the opposition leader said the country has got a new Hitler like Shehbaz Sharif and a new Himmler in the shape of the interior minister.

Opposition Leader Omar Ayub said that Section 144 had been imposed across the Punjab province without any reason. He said that Article 60 of the Constitution allows people to peacefully assemble but the PTI leaders and workers were being denied the same right.

Omar said either they should be allowed peaceful protests or the House should declare that Shehbaz Sharif and Mohsin Naqvi are dictators and there is dictatorship, not democracy, in the country. Omar Ayub said the Punjab Police were a disciplined force but it had been made an indisciplined force due to deeds of the previous caretaker Punjab chief minister and incumbent interior minister. He said the Punjab IGP was a corrupt officer and he had become the custodian of a single party, PMLN, in the province.

Ayub said the police would be ready to arrest PTI-backed parliamentarians when they would reach their constituencies after attending the National Assembly session. He wanted the chair to give a ruling that no PTI parliamentarian would be arrested when they reach their constituencies or participate in protests.

Nighat Shakil of MQM also drew the attention of the interior minister towards increasing street crimes in Karachi, asking him to play his role as the provincial government had failed to fulfill its duties. Meanwhile, Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq took a serious notice of absence of any senior officer of joint secretary level of the Petroleum Division in officials gallery.
