Filmed while repeatedly slapping a woman across the face and hurling abuses at her at a local shopping centre, a man dressed in a police uniform’s shirt in the video was remanded to police officials by the judicial magistrate South on Thursday.
Identified as Akbar, the man, arrested from Hijrat Colony, was claimed to be a volunteer of the Police Qaumi Razakar (PQR) and not a cop, by DIG South Jamil Ahmed in his official clarification issued on Wednesday, after the video went viral on social media, later aired on Geo News.
The provincial authorities sprang into action allegedly after the Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah called on the provincial police chief to submit a report over the matter.
The accused also acknowledged being a member of the voluntary organisation and not a cop, before the judicial magistrate.
He pleaded that the woman’s behaviour provoked him as she spat on his face and abused him when he confronted her regarding a robbery complaint filed against her. The man claimed the woman was a habitual thief.
The woman identified as Rehana was shown violently being slapped on the face repeatedly and abused, in front of a child while a crowd looked on, for confessing to have committed a robbery.
