The current women cricket series between Pakistan and Bangladesh will go a long way in promoting not only sports but also gender equality in our society. Women’s cricket in our country has seen a raft of success stories in the past few years, some of which we are fortunate to hear about in Karachi where our women cricket team sealed the Twenty20 series by defeating the Bangladesh side by 34 runs in the second T20 match. The series also provided women and girls the opportunity to see some good cricket.
What comes next, though, remains the critical question. Women’s participation across all sports is still significantly lower than men’s; as a result, far fewer women are able to enjoy the benefits of sport as a regular part of their lives. The successes in the T20 series have been hugely encouraging and they deserve to be celebrated as such, but it’s imperative that we also see a move towards more women and girls taking part in sports on a regular basis.
