PESHAWAR: Nine persons were killed and six others injured in rain-related incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as the fresh rain spell lashed different parts of the province from Thursday night to early Saturday.

The nine persons including three children, four girls and a woman were killed and the six others sustained injuries in roof collapse and land-sliding incidents caused by heavy rain in four districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa - Malakand, Lower Dir, Upper Dir and Mohmand.

Four persons of a family were killed when the roof of a house collapsed in Sakhakot in Malakand district due to heavy rain at about 1am early Saturday. The roof of the house of one Muhammad Ghani caved in, killing his wife, a son and two daughters.

Local people retrieved the bodies from the debris. In another incident, two girls were killed when a boulder fell on a house in Maidan area in Lower Dir. The 13 and 14-years old daughters of one Zalmay of Dewar village in the remote area of Maidan were killed after a heavy stone fell on their house at about 4:30am when the family was asleep.

Naseehullah, the son of Zalmay who survived, said that a huge stone fell on their two-room, mud-thatched house due to heavy rain when they were asleep. One room of the house, he said, was destroyed and buried his two sisters alive in the debris.

He said five other family members were also in the house and remained unhurt.

The poor family, he said, was not in a position to even reconstruct the room. A girl was killed and another seriously injured when the roof of a room in the house of one Muhammad Rokhan caved in at Jelarr area in Upper Dir district. The locals said that the roof collapsed because of torrential rain. Our correspondent adds from Ghallanai: Two children were killed and five others sustained injuries in two separate incidents of roof collapse in different parts of Mohmand tribal district.

The daughter of Akbar Jan was killed and his wife and five children sustained injuries when the roof of a room in the house caved in due to the recent heavy rain in Amrai Kor area in Safi tehsil.

In another incident, a child was killed after the house of Baghdad Shah collapsed due to rain in Musa Kor area in Ambar tehsil in the district. It may be mentioned that the house of Alimas Khan had collapsed due to heavy rains last week in which his two children had died. The local administration and police had registered the incidents but the affected families are yet to receive any relief package from the government.
