PESHAWAR: Awami National Party (ANP) President Asfandyar Wali Khan paid tributes on Thursday to the late poet-politician Ajmal Khattak on his 10th death anniversary for his services to the party and Pakhtuns.

The ANP president said that Ajmal Khattak was one of the true followers of late Bacha Khan and rendered sacrifices for the cause of non-violence and Pakhtun rights. He said that Ajmal Khattak’s footsteps should be followed for the development and prosperity of the Pakhtuns.

Asfandyar Wali said the veteran politician had given new meaning to the nationalist movements. He said the late politician had played an active role in the struggle against the British imperialists in the subcontinent.

He said Ajmal Khattak was not only a dedicated politician who fought for the rights of the province but was also a scholar and poet. “Ajmal Khattak never compromised on his principles and created awareness among the Pakhtuns through his poetry,” he added.

It may be added that Ajmal Khattak, who belonged to Akora Khattak in Nowshera district, had humble origins but he made a name for himself in politics and Pashto poetry.

He also remained president of the ANP and spent years in prisons in Pakistan and in self-exile in Afghanistan.
