Pemra chief lauds role of TV channels, cable operators

ISLAMABAD: Chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) Muhammad Saleem Baig on Tuesday lauded the role television channels and cable operators in ensuring compliance of the Supreme Court (SC) orders, banning Indian channels and its content.
He held a meeting with office-bearers of the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) and representatives of cable operators Sindh region in Karachi, says a Pemra statement issued here.
While listening to various issues pertaining to media industry, the chairman expressed his unequivocal support to media industry and announced to constitute a committee representing all the stakeholders including Pemra, PBA and cable operators. This committee would identify the core issues pertaining to the media industry and would give recommendations for their redressal.
He stressed that the TV channels and cable operators should ensure a constructive role in creating awareness among the masses by relying public service messages on pressing issues, such as the Supreme Court Dam Fund, Clean Green Pakistan, population and traffic laws, as they play a pivotal role in making of a socially responsible society.
While talking to cable operators of Sindh region, he appreciated their commitment for ensuring implementation of the orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan regarding Indian content. During the meeting cable operators expressed their concerns regarding the availability of Indian content on internet and social media which is adversely affecting their legitimate business. The Pemra chairman reiterated that the Article 19 of Constitution of Pakistan ensures the right of freedom of expression and speech for every citizen. However, this freedom is prone to certain laws which necessitate the compliance of the stakeholders.
Furthermore, The Pemra chairman asked the cable operators to strictly comply with orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. In case of violation the Authority shall adopt the legal course of action against the violators. He was accompanied by Regional General Manager Ashfaq Jumani, General Manager (Operations/Media &PR) Muhammad Tahir and Secretary to the Authority Fakhar-ud-Din Mughal.
