MULTAN: The Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) has decided to reconstruct one of the oldest and historical Hindu temples, Prahladpuri, in Multan, which was demolished by the protesting people 23 years ago in retaliation for demolition of Babri Masjid in India. ETPB Chairman Siddiqul Farooq made this announcement during his visit to Multan and the people from different walks of life welcomed the decision on Monday.
The Punjab Archaeology Department officials said the Prahladpuri temple falls under its purview and the ETPB would have to transfer funds to it for reconstruction of the temple. Siddiqul Farooq said, “We will rebuild this historical temple at its original site and we do hope that India will also restore Babri Masjid.” He said reconstruction of the temple would start in the first week of July this year. The Prahladpuri temple said to have been built by Prahlad Maharaja in Multan about 2800 years ago.
The ETPB chairman said the Pakistan Muslim League-N government respects worship places and sentiments of the minorities. The temple was situated on a raised platform inside Multan Fort, adjacent to tomb of Hazrat Baha’ul Haq Zakariya, and was a prominent landmark of Multan before 1992.
