LAHORE: With a tally of record 186,933 votes, Sufyan Yousaf of MQM remains the top vote getter from Karachi’s National Assembly constituency NA-246 till date, it is learnt.
Abdul Waseem of MQM, with 192,678 votes in the 2013 elections, probably stands tall among all the winners from the Pakistani port city since the first general election of 1970, when it comes to bagging the maximum number of votes in any polling exercise during the last 45 years.
During the 2008 ballot exercise, Sufyan had defeated Sohail Ansari of Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians by a mammoth margin, bagging 180,192 votes. Sohail Ansari could get only 6,741 votes while an independent candidate Saifullah Advocate could bag only 604 votes seven years ago. The turnout in this constituency during the 2008 polls was a very respectable 63.1 per cent.
Of the 310,045 registered voters in NA-246 in 2008, not fewer than 195, 559 had exercised their right of franchise. The number of valid votes had stood at 194,278, while the number of rejected votes was 1,281. By the way, Sufyan Yousaf could win 125,443 votes from NA-247 Karachi during the May 2013 polling exercise.
