The Pakistan Peoples Party and its chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari are concentrating on Karachi completely as they intend to do more work for the city. The people of Karachi must support PPP for it to be able to serve them, said party leader and MPA Saeed Ghani.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Ghani, the PPP’s Karachi president, said Bilawal has always taken ownership of Karachi and its people. He further said the PPP would emerge victorious in upcoming general elections and would form its government in all four provinces.

In the past, the people of Karachi had reposed their full confidence in the Muttahida Qaumi Movement as in the past three decades it had been part of successive governments but, unfortunately, in all those years, the city could not progress, said Ghani.

He said because of MQM’s political methods, Karachi became known in the country as “the city of terrorists” and “symbol of terror”. “But now the reign of terror is over and people are able to make their decisions independently. Both the thinking and mood of the people of Karachi has been changed,” the MPA said.

Ghani claimed that prominent leaders of MQM were willing to join PPP but at the moment his party is focusing on including activists who do work at the grass-roots level because they have the kind of political power that can help achieve electoral success.

Commenting on the persistent load-shedding going on in the city, Ghani said K-Electric and the Sui Southern Gas Company have been working on a pre-conceived plan in order to cause miseries to the people of Karachi. He added the PPP could resort to agitation against both utilities if the need arises.

‘Accept the ruling’

Speaking about the apex court’s decision which ruled that disqualification [of an elected official] under the Constitution’s Article 62(1)(f) was for life, Ghani said it would be better if decisions of political nature are taken in the parliament.

“Whatever work should have been done by the democratic government is being done by the courts,” the PPP leader said. “The nation has to face this situation because of Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan.”

Ghani added that the top court’s ruling had to be accepted. “But it is now Imran Khan’s turn to give his version as what is he going to do with a person who has been disqualified for life and to what extent will he go to honour his own words and claims,” he said, referring to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Jahangir Tareen who also stands disqualified for life from becoming a member of parliament under the court’s verdict.
