Three people, including a minor girl and her father, were killed in different parts of the city on Thursday in accidents with heavy vehicles, according to the police.
A man and his minor daughter were killed on Shahrah-e-Quaideen near Jamaat Khana when a truck bearing registration number TKE-764 crushed their motorcycle. The bodies were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy, said Azizabad police station SHO Jamal Laghari. The victims were identified as 40-year-old Nadeem and his 11-year-old daughter Ayesha.
SHO Laghari said Nadeem picked up Aysha from a private school in Federal B Area and they were returning back to their home when a truck ran into their bike. He added people present on the site caught the truck driver as he was trying to flee and handed him over to police after thrashing him.
Laghari said police arrested the truck driver, impounded his vehicle and started an investigation. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to their heirs for burial. Later, Karachi Traffic Police DIG, taking action, suspended Azizabad Traffic Section Officer Atta Muhammad Jamali and served him a show-cause notice for his alleged failure to take steps to reduce the number of accidents in his jurisdiction.
In a separate incident, a woman was killed and her son was injured when a speeding water tanker crushed their motorbike on a flyover near Jinnah International Airport Karachi during the early hours of Thursday.
Airport police station SHO Faisal Lateef said Zaibunnisa, 60, was heading home with her son on a motorcycle when a water tanker ran them over. The woman died on the spot while her son was injured. Her body and the injured son were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. According to the SHO, the tanker driver managed to flee along with his vehicle. He added police has increased efforts to arrest him.
