A jewellery store located in Jubilee Cloth Market was robbed early on Saturday morning.

Nabi Bux police SHO Malik Atif told The News that a group of robbers armed with hammers and electronic cutters had broken into Jubilee Cloth Market at around 3:15am yesterday.

He said the robbers had scaled a wall to enter the market, which has over 300 shops in total. The officer said the robbers went for a jewellery store, Al-Noor Jewellers.

The store is located between two cloth shops and the robbers entered it by breaking through a wall between the jeweller’s and one of the fabric shops.

The SHO said the robbers took away the jewellery sets on display and a safe containing gold was also missing.

Atif said the shop owner had told police that the gold taken away had been sent in by customers for repairs and polishing. As per the SHO, the shop owner had said that he would come to the police to register a case after calculating the exact amount of financial loss.

Protest

The shop owners of the cloth market later staged a demonstration at Jubilee Chowk and blocked both tracks of MA Jinnah Road.

The protesters condemned the area police for its failure to protect their businesses and to arrest the perpetrators. The demonstration was wrapped up after police representatives assured the shopkeepers that efforts were afoot to arrest the suspects and to enhance security at the market.

Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) AD Khowaja had taken notice of the robbery and directed the DIG South to conduct an inquiry and to submit a report at the earliest.

Such robberies remain a persistent issue in Karachi as in April this year, thieves looted cash and goods worth millions of rupees from 27 shops in Shahabuddin Market in Saddar.

The mass robbery in the Shahabuddin Market was the third in eight months; the market was first robbed on August 23, 2016 and then in December 2016.
