Only two out of the 275 water samples sent for chlorination tests by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation were found to be positive, the civic body announced on Thursday.
As per a statement issued by the KMC, it had collected a total of 456 samples in June and July, 2017 after deaths related to Naegleria fowleri rose in the city. Out of the total samples collected, 275 were sent for testing at the KMC’s laboratory.
However, of the 181 water samples sent for bacteriological tests, 125 samples tested positive for bacteria. Naegleria, also known as the brain-eating amoeba, is found in un-chlorinated waters.
Despite the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board’s hefty budget earmarked for chlorination purpose, only a handful of Karachi’s areas receive chlorinated water. The civic body is also said to have collected 300 food samples during June and July.
