The Pakistan Navy on Thursday celebrated World Oceans Day with an aim to accentuate the significance of oceans and to promote awareness among Pakistan Navy personnel for protection of marine resources, said a press release issued on Thursday.

Under the ambit of the United Nations, World Oceans Day is celebrated across the world every year on June 8 to highlight the importance of oceans and to promote awareness about sustainable use of oceans and marine resources. The oceans cover about two-third of the surface of the earth and are the very foundation of life.

The theme selected this year to promote the spirit of the day is 'Our Ocean – Our Future' with an aim that life on earth is dependent on oceans and healthy oceans are crucial for marine life and billions of people living on this planet.

The Pakistan Navy, being the sole proprietor of the country’s maritime domain, celebrated the day with zeal and fervour by arranging a number of awareness events and activities.

These activities included lectures, seminars, quizzes, essay writings at various educational institutes of the Pakistan Navy, beach cleaning activities and a walk by PN personnel at units near coastal areas where they placed banners in residential areas for awareness of masses.

In his message, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah said: “Pakistan is blessed with over 1,000 KM coastline and a large exclusive economic zone and a continental shelf with abundance of living and non-living resources.”

The naval chief said Pakistan Navy had remained aware of the need for sustainable usage of oceans. “The future generations can also benefit from this treasure trove.”

The Pakistan Navy will continue to play an important role in the global and national efforts to protect and preserve the oceans, he added.
