LAHORE: Attracting a large number of visitors, particularly students, The News Education Expo’17 concluded at the Expo Center here on Sunday.

The two-day event organised by the Jang Media Group featured more than 50 universities, higher education institutions (HEIs) and schools under one roof. Over the years, The News Education Expo has emerged as a mega platform for education institutions and a great opportunity for prospective students to explore which academic programmes participating institutions offer, what are their policies and fee structure etc and which are emerging subject areas.

On the concluding day, Saadia Shariff of the Jang Media Group also distributed shields among the participating institutions and appreciated their active participation in the expo.

Besides providing information related to academic programmes, admissions, policies and fee structure some of the institutions taking part in the expo also organized learn and fun activities for the visitors. While some offered a free facility of measuring blood pressure and body weight, some arranged painting and fun games for children visiting the expo with their families.

A special presentation on “Emerging Subject Areas & Scholarship Opportunities” delivered by renowned educationist and career counsellor Syed Abidi was also held on the concluding day.

Talking to students and audience, Syed Abidi highlighted the importance of career couselling especially at high school level and explained how important and key role this phenomenon played in the development and success of a nation’s economy and progress. He said it was unfortunate that most institutions, especially public sector, totally ignored providing career counselling and guidance to students especially when selecting their majors or specialisms. He added in the absence of professional career counselling, most students end up choosing a course that does not match their academic interests, likes and dislikes, attitudes and behaviours and finally  their career objectives. This leads to divided and confused decisions and broken careers where a U-turn is required with huge wastage of crucial years and money.

In his presentation, Syed Abidi emphasized on bringing the latest and innovative subject areas and degrees that are aligned with the rapid impact and development of digitalisation and technology in daily life. He identified several new degree areas especially at the postgraduate level in Engineering, Computer Science, Biological Science and Management which are in high demand not only in Pakistan but across the world. He added that specialization is now a must if our youth is to become successful and quickly find jobs in the market place.

He also gave a comprehensive description on international scholarship opportunities, process to apply, requirements and documentation etc. and said scholarship opportunities existed for all Pakistani students and one should keep on applying and following it up with proper papers and they should be able to qualify for some kind of scholarship in most countries.

Syed Abidi also appreciated Jang Media Group for organizing the expo saying the event would go a long way in helping the Pakistani student community in finding study opportunities through close interactions which was provided at the forum.
