Lahore

Bhangra, Luddi and Jhoomar etc are identities of Punjab and there are three types of dances in society which are folk dance, dance in courts and spiritual dance.

These views were expressed by historian Syed Muhammad Nisar Safdar on International Dance Day, which is celebrated all over the world on April 29. He said, “Organised arrangement postures and forms of the human body following rhythm is dance. Pakistan is a culturally rich country.  Our folk dance and spiritual dance are not only famous in Pakistan but also recognised internationally.  Moreover, spiritual dance can be seen at shrines of Lahore and the rest of the country."

He said Attan dance is a symbol of peace and Pakhtun culture. "Terrorism cannot eliminate this culture. That is why Pakhtuns perform the dances collectively which gives a sense of collectiveness," he added. Zarin Pana, a veteran classical dancer and in-charge of dance classes at Alhamra, said dance is a source of pleasure. "When a baby is born, they dance by shaking their hands and legs. No one can stop him from dancing. When a person gets happiness, he jumps with joys. Dancers used to perform in the Mughal era; they wore complete dresses. We are following the tradition," she added.
