Professors Enam, Bhutta decorated with awards
Islamabad
Two faculty members of the Aga Khan University (AKU) were decorated with prestigious national awards on March 23. Professor Syed Ather Enam, Chair, Department of Surgery, has been awarded the ‘Sitara-i-Imtiaz’ for his work in the field of medicine, while Professor Bhutta, Founding Director, Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health, AKU, and Co-Director, SickKids Centre for Global Child Health, Toronto, has been honoured with a Pride of Performance Award for his contributions to healthcare education.
Dr. Enam honed his surgical expertise in the US for 12 years before returning to Pakistan to join AKU as an associate professor in Neurosurgery in 2003, and developed a state-of-the-art neurosurgery programme that has trained a new generation of surgeons for Pakistan. He has published acclaimed research on brain tumours and is an expert in minimally invasive spine surgery. Dr. Enam has previously been awarded the Excellence Award in Neurosurgery by the Pakistan Society of Neurosurgery in 2004, the Physician of the Year Medallion Award by St. Joseph’s Mercy of Macomb Hospital, USA, in 2002 and the Outstanding Resident Award by Henry Ford Hospital, USA, in 1998.
Since Professor Bhutta was in Canada, he was conferred the President’s Pride of Performance Award by Tariq Fatimi, the High Commissioner for Pakistan, at a special ceremony on the occasion of Pakistan’s National Day in Ottawa. The event was attended by a large number of diplomats and representatives of the Canadian government and civil society.
