Seminar on ‘Avian Influenza and its Prevention’ held

Islamabad: Proper hand washing, appropriate handling of poultry birds, covering coughs and sneezes, and vaccination are some of the most effective means to prevent Avian Influenza (Bird Flu).
The information was shared at a seminar organised to sensitise people regarding Avian Influenza (Bird Flu), the magnitude of the problem, its modes of transmission and various means of its prevention, an awareness seminar. The event was organized by the Institute of Health and Management Sciences.
The seminar titled "Avian Influenza and its Prevention," was addressed by Dr. Wajid Mirza, a veterinarian and public health professional. Dr. Wajid Mirza during the seminar mentioned that this is a very deadly disease, with a case fatality rate of around 60 per cent in humans. He also mentioned that Avian Influenza has been categorized as an endemic in various parts of Pakistan since 1995.
Dr. Wajid also stated that migratory birds from Central Asian countries are the major source of infection of Avian Influenza. He mentioned during his presentation that eating uncooked chicken and eggs puts a person at an increased risk of getting Avian Influenza. He further said that since humans have little to no immunity against the virus, focus should only be on its prevention.
The Chairman of the Institute, Dr. Muhammad Usman Khan stated in his address that the Institute has been burning midnight oil to promote the field of Public Health in the country. He also mentioned that the Institute will keep on conducting such seminars and workshops in future so that the people can be made aware regarding these health related issues of prime significance.
The seminar was attended by students of Rehabilitation Sciences and Public Health as well as the faculty members of the Institute. It was also graced by the presence of Dr. Samina Naeem Khalid who is currently working as the Associate Professor at the Institute. At the end of the seminar, certificates were distributed among the participants.
The Institute of Health and Management Sciences is currently conducting Master of Science in Public Health and Doctor of Physical Therapy program in affiliation with Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University. The sole aim of the Institute is to make the health status of the Pakistani population better and improve the quality of life of common people by producing qualified and competent healthcare professionals.
