Student found dead in hostel room

A boarding student of Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) was found dead in his hostel room under mysterious circumstances on Monday. 

The student, Shahmir Bajwa, a resident of Karachi, was studying fifth semester of accounting and finance programme. The university staff had to break open the door on Monday evening as the door was locked from inside. He was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. 

A senior LUMS official said that Shahmir was found unresponsive on the bed in his room on Dec 12 and denied media reports about the cause of his death. He termed these mere speculations and said only autopsy would determine the cause of his death. 

“We would be grateful if the media would respect the family’s privacy during this tragedy and refrain from any speculation as to the cause of death until the investigation is complete." The official said Shahmir’s family reached Lahore on Tuesday as they were unable to reach earlier due to fog. 

Defence-B SHO Zia-ul-Haq said that it would be too early to ascertain the cause of his death. However, the initial investigations showed the victim used drugs and he might have died due to overdose, he added. He said police would probe the incident keeping in view all aspects. Autopsy and forensic reports would also help ascertain the cause of his death. The SHO said the family of the deceased had refused the postmortem and they were completing documents to hand over the body to them.

OPC: As a result of the efforts made by the Overseas Pakistanis Commission (OPC) Punjab, 77 Kanal and 8 Marlas land has been retrieved from the illegal possession of a complainant's brother. The possession of the land has been given to the complainant, an American-based Pakistani woman. 

OPC Commissioner Afzaal Bhatti said that Pakistani origin American citizen Kausar Parveen Sherazi had filed a complaint with OPC that her younger brother grabbed property belonging to her and three other sisters, Musharaf Batool, Sobia Yousaf and Saeeda Akhtar in Mahal Rakh Yal Wala, Muzaffargarh district.  Afzaal Bhatti said that OPC referred the case to the District Overseas Committee, Muzaffargarh and by collective efforts of the OPC and the district committee the land was retrieved from the illegal possession of their brother Mansoor Jafri, who had been also receiving the rent from the property for the last one year.  The OPC commissioner said that OPC was vigorously pursuing the cases of overseas Pakistanis.

accidents: At least 638 road crashes were reported to the Provincial Monitoring Cell of the Punjab Emergency Service from all 36 districts of Punjab during the last 24 hours.  Eleven people were killed and 492 badly injured in the accidents.
