Veteran photojournalist Azhar Jafri dies
LAHORE: Veteran photojournalist Azhar Jafri died of cardiac arrest here on Thursday. He was 62.Azhar Jafri had a prolific career as a photojournalist who started his journey with daily Musawat. He also served as a chief photographer for daily Dawn.
During his career Jafri documented numerous national movements related to restoration of democracy, freedom of press and human rights in Pakistan through his pictures and offered readers rare glimpses into the events.His remarkable work included coverage of torture of women on The Mall during the dictatorial regime of General Zia.
His photographs of torture of Begum Nusrat Bhutto were carried by international media. Many of his captured photographs have been included in photojournalism courses in different countries of the world.
In recognition of his services Azhar Jafri was also awarded Presidential Pride of Performance in 2014. His Namaz-e-Janaza will be offered after Jumma prayers at the main mosque of Journalist Housing Society, Harbanspura, on Friday (today).Azhar Jafri left behind a son and two daughters. He was uncle of The News reporter Moayyed Jafri.
